SCHILLER PARK, Ill., March 4, 2009 – A leader by nature, DeMarcus Baymon, a senior at Houston's Cypress Creek High School, leads by example in his exceptional academics and athletic abilities. A three-year starter on the varsity football team, and an all-district player, he led his team in an undefeated district season. At 6 feet, 5 inches and 325 pounds, Baymon boasts the features of a super hero. He can bench over 350 pounds and squat over 550 pounds, an incredible feat. As a stout offensive lineman, Baymon scored 62 pancake blocks in only 10 games.

For his devotion and commitment to the game and his academics, Baymon was selected as a runner-up in the first Hammer Strength Football Player of the Year contest. The award honors student-athletes who demonstrate consistent dedication in four key areas: work ethic, effort, leadership and academics. He will receive a plaque by Hammer Strength, a Hammer Strength T-shirt and will be profiled on the Life Fitness Web site and in the March issue of American Football Monthly magazine.

"DeMarcus might be the finest young man I know. He never misses practice and brings a tremendous work ethic and love of the game that is infectious," said Danny Ramsey, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Cypress Creek. "He is a gifted athlete, but more so, a talented leader."

DeMarcus always puts his team first. Suffering a difficult knee injury last summer, Baymon approached rehab with a definite purpose: to return before the season opening game. His determination and dedication put him on the field at the opening game of the season.

Baymon takes his academics as seriously as he takes his love for the game. His outstanding grades have placed him 26 in a class of 700 seniors. He is well-respected by his peers and teammates, and is the first senior leadership representative, an incredible honor as he was selected by the coaching staff.

"DeMarcus is a true leader," said John Stransky, president of Life Fitness. "His commitment and dedication to his sport, teammates and academics have earned him this recognition."

Baymon hopes to attend the University of Texas next fall.
