Recognized as Hammer Strength Football Player of the Year Run
SCHILLER PARK, Ill., April 21, 2010 – Only two days after members of the 2008 graduating class of Southern Local High School in Salineville Ohio, had received their diplomas, the head football coach had a fatal heart attack. The football team was shocked by the sudden tragedy and led the coach's funeral procession. Devastated by their loss, the team's morale was down, until senior Dylan Puckett, defensive tackle, stepped up to plate. Puckett was the voice of motivation and inspiration, encouraging his team members to give 110 percent during the upcoming season for their late coach.
He took on the leadership role for the team as senior defensive captain, and pushed his teammates to be the best that they could be, given the circumstances. Puckett was recognized as the county All-Star and broke the school's all-purpose tackle record with 171 total tackles.
"Dylan understood that the season was going to be difficult with the loss of the head coach, but he also understood that the boys' sticking together as team was important," said Southern Local High School head football coach Michael Skrijar. "2009 was not a play-off season. It was a season of victory just because the boys walked on the field with their heads held high. Dylan Puckett was one those players who ensured his teammates were emotionally, physically and academically ready for anything. He encouraged and counseled those he saw in need. He is what the team needed."
The Hammer Strength Football Player of the Year Award honors student-athletes who demonstrate consistent dedication in four key areas: work ethic, effort, leadership and academics. As a runner-up, Puckett will receive a plaque from Hammer Strength, a Hammer Strength T-shirt and will be profiled on the Life Fitness Web site as well as in the May issue of American Football Monthly magazine.
Puckett was a leader in his academic studies as well as serving as junior and senior class president. He is a member of the National Honor Society and tutors his teammates in his free time. Puckett will attend Walsh College in Canton, Ohio, in the fall.
